Gala Information – Swimmers need to be at least 9 or 10 years old to participate in most galas apart from friendly Portarmagh gala and Annual Club Gala.
Our swimming club is involved in two leagues
Aquasprint and PTL
Club members are expected to be available for selection for these galas. The Swimming Club covers the cost of entry into leagues and bus transport when required. Parents will be expected to assist in the running of these galas, e.g. timekeepers, catering, results table.
All other galas are ‘Open’ galas.
Swimmers are to prioritise club galas over open galas.
On some weekends there may be an Aquasprint or a PTL gala on a Saturday and another open gala on a Sunday. If parents wish their child to only swim in one gala at a weekend they must choose the Swimming Club’s Aquasprint/PTL gala. Swimmers are however free to swim in both galas over a weekend.
Club coaches will contact swimmers directly if they are chosen to represent the club at Skill Meets.

Swim Ulster Development Galas
This season there are 5 Development Galas. These galas are mainly aimed at swimmers who have a certain level of proficiency but are open to all swimmers aged 10 and above.
Ultimately swimmers attending Development Galas will be looking to achieve the Qualifying Standards set out by Swim Ulster. The standards posted on the noticeboard and in the handbook are applicable up until 31st December 2019. The 2020 QT’s will be available in October.
In order to progress on to Qualifying Meets -
Swimmers aged 10-11 years must achieve the Individual Medley Assessment at a SU Development gala plus two qualifying Standards from eligible events – that is they need either 100m (10yr)/200m (11yr) IM and two additional times in two different events.
Swimmers aged 12 and over require three qualifying standards in two different strokes. –
For example: 100m free; 200m free and 100m Back
To summarize swimmers aged 12 and over need 3 times in three different events but 2 times can be the same stroke, but different distances.
Individual Medley times can only be achieved at a SU Development gala.
All other times can be achieved at any Level 2 meet.
Additional galas for swimmers attending Development meets would be Bangor Open Winter Festival and SU Swim Festival.
Qualifying standards are required to enter the following galas
SU Qualifying Galas
Ulster Short Course Championships
Irish Short Course Championships
Mc Cullagh International
Irish Long Course Championships
Ulster Long Course Championships
IAG Division 2
Irish National Summer Long Course Championships
There are different qualifying standards for each of these galas and they will be available in due course.
Only swimmers achieving these times are eligible to participate.
